Velvet & Vine

On her debut album Velvet & Vine, Sonia James invites listeners onto the front porch for an intimate, cinematic journey through Southern Neo-Soul. Blending the timeless, sultry phrasing of jazz legends with the heavy bass, warm Rhodes, and crisp production of modern lo-fi R&B, James delivers a vocal performance that feels like a secret being told in a dark room. The 12-track project explores the tension between softness and struggle—the smooth "velvet" of romantic late-night grooves, and the entangled "vines" of claustrophobic, dark neo-soul moments. From the moody, atmospheric tension of "Heavy Air" to the sweeping confidence of "Adjust My Crown" and the collaborative dynamic of "No Rush" featuring MrCarolCity, the album is a meticulously crafted soundscape of heavy summer humidity and deep emotional resonance. Released under DCX Media Group, Velvet & Vine is more than just a collection of songs; it is a fully realized era. It is an invitation to leave the world at the door, let the heavy air settle, and simply sway in the dark.
