About The Release & Liner Notes
The studio was located in an abandoned warehouse on the waterfront, but once you went down the stairs, it was a completely different world. It was a temple. We called it the 37th Chamber.
The Old Master—a brilliant, fiercely dignified elder who kept his natural grey hair short and always wore these immaculate, custom dark silk and brocade kung fu robes—was our compass. He didn't just teach martial arts; he was a master of the analog board. He had S.N.A.K.E. doing physical exercises in the morning, and then made him track 16 bars of absolute fire on a tattered notebook in the afternoon.
S.N.A.K.E. would stand there in his sleeveless black hooded vest, mask on, completely focused, while the Master sat back at the console, tweaking the VU meters with one hand and waving a finger to the rhythm of the reel-to-reel with the other. The smoke in that room was so thick you could barely see the tape spin, but the energy was electric.
S.N.A.K.E.’s arms—which literally looked like they were textured with green reptilian scales from the intensity of his lifestyle—were constantly moving. We didn't use digital samplers. We took vintage vinyl, ancient movie dialogue records, and ran them straight through a custom, analog chain. The scratches you hear on 'Master Killer' aren't digital effects—they’re raw, hands-on turntablism done in real-time, live on the Golden Technics.
The Master’s philosphy was simple: 'If the beat doesn't hit as hard as a palm strike to the chest, we don't press it.' I think we succeeded.
